2015 North American International Auto Show

Just returned from another trip to Detroit for the North American International Auto Show.  It was a great show this year and sports/performance cars seemed to be the common thread.  It’s safe to say that the American auto industry has fully recovered and is now thriving.

The Ford GT was definitely the star of the show.  I wasn’t sure about this car when I initially saw the photos.  It looked a bit unrefined.  I didn’t feel that way when I saw it in person, though.  Awesome!Ford GT Ford GTFord GT Ford GTThe Shelby Mustang GT350R was painted the same gorgeous shade of metallic blue as the GT.Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Ford Mustang Shelby GT350RFord even had an original GT40 and Shelby Mustang on display for a little history lesson.Ford GT40 Shelby GT350Acura NSXAcura NSX Acura NSXBuick Avenir ConceptBuick Avenir Concept Buick Avenir Concept Buick Avenir Concept Buick Avenir ConceptThe Cadillac ATS-V and CTS-V models looked great.  Actually, every Cadillac was impressive.  Especially the interiors.  I think Caddy is finally there…a legitimate competitor for the German luxury makers.Cadillac ATS VCadillac ATS V Cadillac CTS-VSpeaking of Germans…Mercedes Benz AMG GT Mercedes Benz AMG GT Mercedes Benz F1 Audi TT BMW M6 Coupe Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE Concept Porsche 911 Porsche 911 headlampA neat little Mini Concept.Mini Superleggera Vision Concept Mini Superleggera Vision ConceptJaguar F-Type Coupe.Jaguar F-Type CoupeInfiniti Q60 Concept Infiniti Q60 Concept Infiniti Q60 Concept Infiniti Q60 ConceptInfiniti Q60 Concept Infiniti Q60 ConceptAlfas, New and Old.Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe Alfa Romeo 33 StradaleHyundai SantaCruz Concept.  This thing was a bit of a surprise for me.  The surfacing is really nice: entertaining without being frivolous.  Although, I’d like to get an explanation on that door vent…Hyundai Santa Cruz ConceptHyundai Santa Cruz Concept Hyundai Santa Cruz Concept Hyundai Santa Cruz ConceptThe Corvette Z06 on display had a pretty extreme aero package.Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Chevrolet Corvette Z06Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Concept.Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Concept Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 ConceptToyota FT-1 Concept.  It was shown in red last year.  I really dug the liquid silver finish.Toyota FT-1 Concept Toyota FT-1 ConceptLexus RCF GT3 race carLexus RC F GT3

SEMA 2013

After missing the show last year, it was great to be back in Vegas for SEMA.  It was super-crowded…more than I’ve ever seen.  I guess that’s a good thing, but it made it quite difficult to look at some of the vehicles on display.

This ’32 Ford coupe was my favorite car of the show.  It didn’t seem to be getting a lot of attention, which is a shame.  A really tasteful, quality car.

This thing makes me so happy!  Why doesn’t anyone build stuff like this anymore??

Mint green continues to be a popular color with the import crowd.  Street Rodders went through this in the 90′s.  Is it time for a comeback?

SEMA 2013Alloway’s Chevy Fleetline looks great.  Typical Alloway formula: stock-ish body + big motor + big 5-window wheels + low stance + exellent craftsmanship = awesome car.  It always works and probably always will.

These bolted-on widebody flares were a big trend this year.  I believe they are all made by the same Japanese shop, but they’re showing up on all types of vehicles.  Actually, widebody conversions of any type are hot right now.SEMA 2013 SEMA 2013 SEMA 2013SEMA 2013

2013 Street Rod Nationals

The Louisville Street Rod Nats has come and gone once again.  It continues to be one of my favorite events of the year.  The laid-back atmosphere, the sheer size, and the nostalgia of the event (I’ve been attending this show for as long as I can remember) all add up to a big, sweaty pile of hot rod awesomeness!

This ’33 Chevy coupe really caught my eye. The color combination is awesome!  You don’t see many ’33 Chevy’s…especially ones built to this level.

The indoor vendors’ area at the Nats is really good.  This year, one of the booths had the latest Ridler winner, a ’40 Ford coupe built by Andy Leach at Cal Automotive Customs for owner Ron Cizek, up on a lift for everyone to check out.  The bottom of this car is even more impressive than the top.  The effort and craftsmanship that went into the creation of all of the one-off parts is staggering.
